She has two sisters named Danielle and Jane. Her brother is Michael. Liza's parents divorced when she was five years old, after which her mother married Dan Aykroyd in 1979, who died in 1984.

Liza moved to Los Angeles in 1989 to pursue her career in acting and modeling. The actress received her first role when she was only 14 years old in the movie The Last Dragon (1985).
