Like being Jewish or being black or being gay… I feel comfortable with them all because I know enough about each of those cultures so I can write something about them and make it funny rather than make fun of them which would be offensive instead of funny. So I think it makes comedy better when you go into other cultures and learn their history and learn their language and learn their customs and learn all that stuff so you can create good comedy… And when you write something that comes out sounding like bad comedy then no one laughs because it isn’t good comedy at all. It just sounds like some hack trying to be funny by using some hack jokes that aren’t really funny anyway because they aren’t unique enough to get a laugh out of people so they get annoyed by them instead of laughing at them so the audience ends up not enjoying it at all… So I think having some knowledge about other cultures makes me more aware of what things are actually funny so when I hear jokes that sound
