Ruth Gordon was born in New York City, into a family that had lived in the same building for three generations. She attended Sarah Lawrence College and graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Her first husband, Peter Sellers, whom she met at Sarah Lawrence, became her second husband. Ruth and Peter Sellers were both members of London's famed Actors Studio and made their film debuts together playing husband and wife in Alfred Hitchcock's "Frenzy" (1972). The couple appeared often on television, including "The Dick Cavett Show" and "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson". The two also worked together on several films including "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (2001)
