Lawrence Ferlinghetti is a noted American poet and writer, and the founder of City Lights Books, a San Francisco-based independent publisher of one of the nation's most celebrated poetry series. A member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in the 1930s and 1940s, he was arrested for his involvement in an obscenity trial. After many trials, he served 22 months in San Quentin Prison before being paroled. He has been described as "the Beat Generation's greatest poet." His work has been recognized with major awards such as the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry (for "A Coney Island of the Mind"), the National Book Award for Poetry (for The Penguin Book of Contemporary American Verse) and a Guggenheim fellowship.
