Konrad Adenauer (May 27, 1876 – June 1, 1963) was a German statesman who served as the first Chancellor of Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) from 1949 to 1963. He led the country through the aftermath of World War II and was instrumental in formulating West Germany's economic and political institutions. He was previously Prime Minister of Bavaria (1932–1938), as well as minister president (head of government) of both Bavaria (1923–1932) and Prussia (1933–1938).
Adenauer became the first leader of the Christian Democratic Union, which later became known as the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union, a conservative party that governed West Germany from 1949 to 1994.
