Karl Liebknecht (1871-1919) was a German Marxist politician, who was elected as the first Chairman of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) in January 1919. His time in office was short-lived; he was arrested soon after and executed by firing squad in August 1919. Karl Liebknecht was born in Markneukirchen, Pomerania. He participated in the anti-Austrian uprising of 1848–49 and the Revolution of 1848 in Germany (which brought down the government of King Frederick William IV)
He fought with theFreikorps in the First World War, rising to the rank of captain, and served as an active member of the Spartacus League. He joined the Independent Social Democratic Party (USPD) in 1917. During this time he became an important figure within the USPD leadership, but his intellectual abilities were not recognized during this period.
