Following graduation, Mears took a job writing copy for a local radio station in Philadelphia. In 1946, she began work as an editor at the Philadelphia Bulletin, where she was promoted to Deputy Editor in 1950. In 1952, Mears began working for the Associated Press, first as a writer and then as a supervisor of feature writing.

She was promoted to Editor-in-Chief of The Associated Press Stylebook in 1961. She retired from AP in 1977 after serving for more than thirty years.
