George B. Smoot was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1931. He attended the University of Utah, graduating with a BS degree in physics in 1953. He later received his PhD from Princeton University in 1957
He joined the faculty at Stanford University in 1965, where he is currently a professor emeritus of physics. He is best known for his research on cosmic microwave background radiation, which has led to important advances in understanding the universe and cosmology.
