Born in South Dakota, Daryl Hall moved to Boston, Massachusetts at age 12. He took an interest in music at a young age, playing violin in the church choir and attending the Berklee College of Music for one year. After graduating from high school, he moved to New York City where he worked as a waiter at the famed 21 Club before being drafted into the United States Army, serving two years active duty after being honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force Reserve

Upon leaving the service, he became a well-known session drummer for producers including Quincy Jones, Andy Wallace, Mike Post, David Foster and Dr. Luke. After achieving success as a session musician, he became one of the most successful pop artists of the 1980s with his band Hall & Oates.
