About This Quote

In the book, “Talking as Fast as I Can,” by Lauren Graham, a young woman named Tessa is on a date with a man named Nathan. They are in a car together in which they are listening to music. The car is parked in front of a movie theater in which they are choosing their movie. As they are looking at the different movies, Tessa states that she is bored and wants to go home. She mentions that every date she has had has been exactly the same, which is true because she has been on several dates that have not gone well.

Nathan suggests that he take her home, but she explains that when people take her home it is because they are trying to get in her pants. When Nathan tries to push through her defenses, Tessa gets annoyed and complains about how she has never had any fun on dates. She tells him that he does not understand what it is like being with someone who has no interest in you whatsoever. She believes that if she were with someone who was only interested in getting laid, she would be bored out of her mind too.

She also believes that if there were someone who only wanted to talk about themselves for an entire evening then she would be bored out of her mind too. She then tells him that she needs someone who likes the same things as her and adds “and if he can’t be bothered to notice me for more than three hours at a time, I’d rather be alone than spend one more second with him” (Graham). Nathan disagrees with them all and says that there are plenty of people like Tessa out there. He gives many examples of people like Tessa who seem like they don’t want anything to do with others until they discover hidden talents or other interests that make them interesting individuals. He also mentions how he met his wife while sitting on the other side of an invisible line ( Graham). Later, while sitting in the basement playing video games, Nathan explains to Tessa how he met his wife ( Graham).

He states how he did not expect to meet anyone special when he went to see the movie “The Talented Mr Ripley” but ended up watching it with someone else ( Graham). They did not talk during the movie but ended up talking after discussing their feelings towards Tom Ripley after watching this movie ( Graham). When they got into their cars together after the movie ended it was clear that they
