If the ignorance of nature gave birth to such a variety of gods, the knowledge of this nature is calculated to destroy them.

About This Quote

This quote from the 17th-century French philosopher, Rene Descartes, says a lot about the relationship between wisdom and ignorance. The older generation of gods may have been ignorant, but that’s no reason to continue worshipping them. The younger generation of gods – or any other kind – should be worshipped so long as they comply with nature’s laws. In fact, they should be worshipped even more because they are ignorant. That ignorance is a good thing so long as it doesn’t lead to the worship of false idols.
