Shinji slowly fell forward onto his face. Debris bounced up on impact. It took less than thirty seconds for the rest of his body to die. The memento of his beloved uncle--the earring worn by the woman he loved--was now stained with the blood running down Shinji's left ear, reflecting the glow from the red flames of the farm building. And so the boy known as the Third Man, Shinji Mimura, was dead. Koushun Takami
About This Quote

Shinji Mimura was a young man of eighteen, who lived in Tokyo. He had an interest in archaeology and had studied at the University of Tokyo. He became fascinated by the artifacts found on the Island of Manhattan. This led him to create a secret organization called NERV--New Evangelion Research Vehicle--which used the remains of the first manned space flights as its basis.

The organization had built another giant robot, known as Eva-01, with the goal of fighting against the Angels, which were beings that had been sent by God to annihilate humans. Eva-01 was piloted by fourteen pilots, all of whom had been trained at NERV's headquarters in Tokyo-3. The story begins with Shinji awakening in his bedroom, where he finds his mother at his side, watching for him for he is late coming home from school. She is worried because it has been a very bad day for her son and she is afraid that he has become lost or hurt himself. She has been making breakfast for him when suddenly she hears an explosion outside followed by the sound of gunshots.

Then there was another explosion outside. As she hears more gunfire she goes to check on Shinji only to find that he is not in his room nor does he answer her calls for him outside. Frantic, she rushes into her son's room to find him dead on his face with blood gushing out from his head and ear.

His neck is broken, so it is clear what happened to him before she attacks him attacks him with a kitchen knife to try to stop the bleeding..
