He tore his gaze from the door to eye the medallion at his chest, black and dull, sharply offset by the gold around it and along the chain. She was losing this war, he thought, feeling the dullness of Eleanor Black’s dread swarming against his dead heart where the medallion fell. She was losing it and it did not matter who won: We would cease to be no matter the outcome. S.C. Parris
About This Quote

In the novel, The Black Witch by Daniel Polansky, the epigraph above is from a letter written by Eleanor’s brother, Martin. In it, he is predicting that they will die in a fire and that they must be prepared for that inevitability. He goes on to speak of their family’s curse and how they have been unable to break it. At the end of the letter, he mentions his belief that the only way they can break the curse is to die in a fire.

In this quote, Polansky shows how the curse is a constant companion in the lives of all three siblings. In each letter from Martin, there was an acknowledgement of death looming over them. Though Martin accepted the inevitable doom of their deaths, he also knew what would be waiting for them after death: nothing.

To die in a fire was their only way out and nothing could stop them from following through with their plan.
