Willis Carto has run the Liberty Lobby since the 1950s. He started it as a small newsletter, Liberty, to defend America against communism. His staff included the future leaders of the anti-Communist movement, Joseph McCarthy, Pat Buchanan and Phyllis Schlafly. Carto says he is just an old country boy, who fell in love with America because of his family. He says "I'm not a Nazi or fascist or even white supremacist. I just believe that every person has the right to live by their own conscience." Carto has been described as one of the most powerful men in America.
He once said: "I'm certainly not anti-Semitic... I don't hate Communists... I despise fascists."
