W. C. Doane was an author and editor of more than fifty books of fiction and nonfiction, including the wildly successful series of "Doane's Guides" which focused on such subjects as photography, travel, and fencing. Doane's most famous book was "The Complete Guide to Tennis" (1903), which he had published in serial form in "The American Boy" magazine
It went on to become the most widely purchased tennis book of all time, with over a million copies sold. It was translated into seven languages.
