Tzvetan Todorov is Professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he has taught since 1971. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1975. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Guggenheim Fellow, a Fulbright Fellow, a Marshall Research Fellow, a Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University, and a member of the Board of Directors at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University

In 2010 he was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama for his contributions to his field and to U.S. public life in general. His major research interests include philosophy of mind and cognitive science, philosophy of language and linguistics, social cognition and human nature.
