His work has appeared in the New Yorker, Harper's, Harper's Magazine, The Atlantic Monthly, Rolling Stone, The New York Times Magazine, Esquire, The Washington Monthly, GQ, Outside, Men's Journal and Sports Illustrated. His novel "Ghost Soldiers" won the National Book Award for nonfiction
