Thomas Shadwell (1603-1660) was an English dramatist and playwright. He was born in London, the son of Thomas Shadwell, a mercer. Thomas was educated at Merchant Taylors' School, where he made friends with Ben Jonson, Samuel Butler, Christopher Marlowe, and John Webster; he continued his education at Magdalen Hall, Oxford. Most of his plays were produced by the King's Company in the public theatres of London
Thomas married Mary Harte on 10 March 1626. They had a son and a daughter. Mary died on 5 March 1635.
In 1639 Shadwell married secondly Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Henry Denham, of Denham Court in Buckinghamshire.
