Thomas Chandler Haliburton was an English-Canadian farmer, soldier, politician, and author. He was born in Nova Scotia in 1786, the eldest son of coppersmiths who had emigrated to Nova Scotia from England. He worked in the family copper smithing business until 1816, when he travelled to Philadelphia via New York City in order to study law at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his degree by 1819 and returned to Nova Scotia where he became a member of the provincial legislature in 1822.
