The Mother, the founder of the Rock Creek Center for Mindfulness, is a Buddhist monk who was born in Japan in 1932. He began his monastic life at age 12, living on the top of Mt. He served as abbot of the Shingonji Temple in Nagano, Japan until 1959, when he followed Buddhism's tradition by traveling to the West to study meditation and to teach. He traveled extensively throughout Europe before settling in India in 1965. He has since founded several centers of Buddhist meditation in India and around the world, including the Rock Creek Center for Mindfulness.
