Scott O'Dell was born in Miami, Florida, but spent most of his boyhood growing up in San Diego. He is the author of numerous books for children, including the award-winning Island of the Blue Dolphins. He later moved to Colorado, where he completed his bachelor's degree at Colorado State University. Scott worked as a newspaper reporter for seventeen years before becoming a full-time writer
He is married to his childhood teacher, the former Margaret Whitlock.
