Rolf Margenau was born in Hallein, Austria, in 1913. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Vienna, where he later taught theoretical physics. He was the first to identify the principle of quantum tunneling (i.e., the "tunnel effect"), and he developed an approximate theory of the quantization of energy states in solids
In 1960 he founded a school for gifted students at his alma mater. In 1967, he founded the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Relativistic Astrophysics in Vienna with Georg Joos, whom he had met when they were both students at Harvard University. Margenau died in 1987 at the age of sixty-eight.
