Robert Owen (1771–1858) was an English social reformer and philanthropist, who founded the community of New Harmony, Indiana in 1825. He believed that mankind could be perfected through self-sufficiency and cooperation; he called this way of living Utopia. Owen was an early mentor of several notable figures of the 19th century, including Charles Fourier, Friedrich Engels, Karl Marx, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, Étienne Cabet, Louis Blanc, Charles Hallé, William Thompson, John Ruskin and William Morris.
