Robert Laxalt is a writer, a publisher, and a professor of English. He has held the Bancroft Chair of Western American Literature at Stanford University since 1987, becoming director of the Center for Western American Studies in 1991. He edited four books on Western American literature and seventeen books in English translation of Mexican and Spanish American literature, including The Last Generation: The Novels of Alejandro Lerdo de Tejada, winner of the PEN/Book-of-the-Month Club Award for translation.
