At age 41, he returned to the music scene with his first solo album, Intensive Care (2009). It was certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). The same year, he portrayed Bobby Darin in the biographical film Beyond the Sea, which was released to generally negative reviews.
Williams has also appeared on stage throughout his musical career, most notably as Sonny Liston in a London production of Eugene O'Neill's play "A Moon for the Misbegotten" (2005). He has had leading roles in other West End productions of musicals such as Les Misérables (2008) and The Woman in White (2012). He also made his Broadway debut as Elton John in the musical Billy Elliot the Musical (2008–09), receiving mostly positive reviews.
