Richard Cobden (1786-1864) was one of the foremost philanthropists of the nineteenth century. He was an Englishman, by birth (and later naturalization), who emigrated to the United States in 1839. The son of an eminent clergyman, he was for many years a leading member of the "philanthropic" movement in America, and one of the most successful American merchants engaged in foreign trade. He was elected to Congress in 1857, and served until his death.
