Pope Paul VI (Latin: Pope Pius VI; Italian: Pio VI; 18 December 1792 – 8 April 1878) was head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State from 21 June 1963 until his death. He was elected pope at the age of 80, upon the death of his predecessor, Pope John XXIII. He was the first pope to take the name Paul, which he took from the apostle Saint Paul.
