Oliver Reginald Tambo was the leader of the South African liberation movement during the apartheid era. He was a prominent leader in the African National Congress (ANC) and was the first president of the post-apartheid South Africa, serving from 1994 to 1999. He was also President of the ANC from 1960 until 1991. As well as being a leader in the ANC, Tambo served as president of the Pan Africanist Congress, served as Deputy President of South Africa from 1983 to 1989, and was also a member of the South African Parliament

After his retirement from politics, he was awarded various national honors for his work including being given a lifetime honorary doctorate by Stellenbosch University, an honorary doctorate by Stellenbosch University in 1990, by Stellenbosch University in 1993 and by Stellenbosch University in 1998.
