Nicolas Malebranche (1638-1715) was a French philosopher. He was born at Rennes (Normandy) and studied at the Jesuit College of La Flèche. He went to Paris for further study, and became professor of philosophy at the Sorbonne in 1678. His works include an influential commentary on Descartes' Meditations, two treatises on physics, and his chief work, The Search after Truth (1688), wherein he illustrated the existence of God
Malebranche's _Essay on Man_ was translated into English by Thomas Robert Molesworth in 1710, and the translation was reprinted in 1731.
