Neal Ascherson is a distinguished historian and biographer, best known for his seven books about the life of Sir Winston Churchill, beginning with The Last Lion: Winston Spencer Churchill, Visions of Glory (1988) and The Triumph and Tragedy of Winston Spencer Churchill (2001). He was born in England in 1933 and educated at Charterhouse School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was Professor of History at the University of Manchester from 1969 to 1989. He has taught at the universities of Southampton, Cambridge, Glasgow, Kent and Warwick.
