Upon returning to Alabama, she became a skilled nurse and helped the elderly care for themselves. She began writing stories at age fifty-five when her husband encouraged her to do so. Her first book, "The Garden of Dreams" was published in 1977.

It is still in print today. Meridel wrote six other books before her death in 2000, including "Alicia's Payback," "The King's Secret," "The Baron's Bride," "Old Friends Never Die," "The Widow's Secret," and "A Lady of Dreams."
