Malcolm Wallop was born in London, England to American parents. He was educated at Eton College, Cambridge University and the Sorbonne, where he received a PhD in Philosophy. His diplomatic career took him to Paris, Rome, Washington and Durban. He was awarded the OBE in 1987 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of St John in 1990. In June 2000 he became Foreign Minister in John Major's government as Baron Wallop of Wallop, Hampshire.
In 2004 he became Secretary General for NATO. In 2008 he was made a Life Peer as Baron Wallop, of Wallop in the County of Hampshire.
