After many years of estrangement from him, Mabel Katz finally met him again on his deathbed in Southampton Hospital. He died on July 12, 1938, and she never saw him again, but she never lost him. Three months later she was reading letters he had written her.

Shortly after that she published the first volume of the letters under the name of Mabel Starr. The second volume was not published until 1950 under the title of The Life and Letters of Albert Katz.
