Lord Samuel was the son of the Earl of Caithness and the Earless of Caithness and grandson of President James Wilson, Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. He was educated at Westminster, Eton and Trinity College Cambridge. He was a soldier in the British Army, fought in India and Burma and later became a full-time writer.
