Katina Marshell Cotton-Sliwa was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1984. She is the author of the novel, The Color of Water (published by Penguin Books), which she calls "a love letter to her grandparents." It tells the story of several generations of families, immigrants and Americans, who settled in New England. The novel focuses on themes of family history, immigration, collectivism, and multiculturalism. The Color of Water was nominated for the 2014 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award

Katina received a B.A. from Harvard University and a Master's degree from the University of Utah. She is currently a doctoral candidate in English at Indiana University Southeast's School of Letters and a Fellow at the IU Southeast Writing Program.
Katina lives with her husband and two sons in rural Vermont.
