Julia Gillard (born 23 January 1956) is a former Australian politician and the first female Prime Minister of Australia. She was the first and only female Prime Minister to lead an Australian government. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, Gillard underwent treatment that included chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which led to a recurrence of cancer in 2013 that required her to take time off from her duties as the Leader of the Opposition to undergo chemotherapy.
