He was formerly chairman of President Clinton’s Council of Economic Advisers (1999-2000). From 2001 to 2003 he served as Chief Economist and Senior Vice President for Development Economics at the World Bank. At Columbia, he is also director of its Initiative for Policy Dialogue and director of Columbia’s Earth Institute.

An expert on international trade and macroeconomics, Stiglitz has been a leading critic of financial deregulation and the tax policies that encourage it. In 2004 he was appointed by former British Prime Minister Tony Blair to chair an inquiry into Britain’s banking system. The report he issued found that banks had been mismanaged and made reckless investments, leading to a financial crisis that affected many countries worldwide.

In 2010 Stiglitz was named among Time magazine's 100 most influential people in the world.
