John Stein was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1917. An avid reader of voracious proportions who has always been interested in ideas and learning, he began his college life as a pre-med student at Washington University. At the time, he had no specific interests, but was interested in everything from psychology to politics; he graduated with a Graduate Degree of Arts
However, by 1939, after taking a part-time job as a reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, he had become deeply involved with radio and radio drama and knew that this was his calling. He would go on to create more than 300 radio broadcasts and wrote four musicals for radio and two plays.
