John Philpot Curran, born in Dublin, Ireland, was a professor of mathematics at Harvard from 1852 to 1881. He wrote a textbook which was widely used for over 60 years and he also published several papers on differential equations. In 1885 he became the first American to be elected a Foreign Honorary Member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He died in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1897.
