John McLaughlin was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He emigrated to Canada in 1942, where he graduated from the University of Toronto, and received his medical degree from the University of Toronto Medical School in 1960. He completed his internship at St. Joseph's Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, and then became a staff physician at St
Joseph's Regional Health Centre in London, Ontario. Dr. McLaughlin was appointed Director of the London Regional Health Centre in 1974 and became Director of Hospitals for the Western Region of the Ontario Ministry of Health in 1979.
He held the positions of Chief Executive Officer and President of St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton Incorporated (the largest not-for-profit health care organization in Canada) from 1988 to 1997. Dr.
McLaughlin has been called upon to serve on many national and international boards of directors, including the Boards of Directors of the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement (CFHI), and the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI).
