His books include "The Dark", "The Barracks", "In The Beggar's House", "A Farm Besieged", "In The Thicket" and "In the Shadow of the Glen". He gained international attention for his novel, The Barracks, which won Ireland's prestigious Booker Prize in 1981 and was later turned into a play and a film.
