John Galliano was born in London, England, to a French mother and a father from Sri Lanka. His parents divorced when he was a young child and he only saw his father only a few times as an adult. Galliano attended schools in London and Paddington and later studied at the Central School of Art and Design in London. He began his professional career as a designer for the men's clothing company Dior and other fashion houses during the 1980s and 1990s. He began decorating his own apartment in 1994 and opened his first store called "Galliano" (named after his son) in 1996.
He became famous as a creative director for Jean Paul Gaultier and then for Dior Homme before starting his own line of men's ready-to-wear fashion called "John Galliano Couture".
