Joe Slovo is a former political prisoner who was imprisoned by the apartheid government for his leadership role in the African National Congress (ANC). He was elected to serve as Deputy President of South Africa in 1994, became Minister of Health in 1996, and then Deputy President of South Africa in 1997. He was the first black person to be elected deputy president of a democratic country.
