J.M. Harrison is the author of The Captive Bride, published in 1884 by Izaak Walton Press, and has since been reprinted about twenty-two times. Harrison studied for the ministry at Valparaiso University, where he met Thomas Starr King (1815–1901), then pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Chicago. The two became close friends; King encouraged Harrison's writing and helped him publish his first book, The Captive Bride (1884).
