She graduated with a degree in English from Indiana University in 1995 and moved to Chicago to work in publishing. While living there, she founded the Merrow Press, which published several books by other authors before being sold in 2000. Her first novel, The Outsider Room, was published in 2001 by Bloomsbury USA Children's Books.

It was followed by another debut title, The Summer Prince, published by Bloomsbury USA Children's Books in 2002. J.L.'s books have received numerous awards for their originality and appeal to YA readers. Her latest novel is The Dead and the Gone (Bloomsbury Children's Books/Scholastic), and her first novel for adults is The Vengeful Daughter (Random House/Delacorte).
