James S. Coleman was a professor at the University of Chicago and the co-founder of the American School Counselor Association. His research on school integration and minority education, published in his groundbreaking book, "The Adolescent Society: The Challenge to the Family," motivated President Carter to establish a National Commission on Excellence in Education, which was headed by Coleman and included many other prominent educators and researchers. He died in 1998.
