He won his first national title at 18, the same year that the Pakistan National Badminton Championship was officially launched. He is known as "the greatest player of all time". He held the record for consecutive titles at the World Badminton Championships with 16 titles between 1970 and 1986. Jahangir is also known as "Prince of Badminton" for his contribution to the game of badminton.

He holds world records in men's singles (405–405), men's doubles (732–732), and mixed doubles (1575–1576). Jahangir is widely regarded as one of the greatest badminton players ever. He is also an ambassador for several charitable causes including breast cancer awareness and children's education.

He has been awarded honorary doctorates by five universities: King's College London, Punjab University Lahore, University of Victoria, Simon Fraser University and University of Alabama Birmingham. He has also been conferred with many awards including: The Commonwealth Medal for Service to Sport; The Outstanding Contribution award from Asian Badminton Federation; The Most Outstanding Player award from Badminton World Federation; and The Sportsman of the Year Award from Pakistan Sports Board. Jahangir was married to Maryam Jahangir and had one son – Muhammad Jahangir – who passed away at a very young age in 1996 due to an epileptic seizure which left him paralysed from head to toe except his hands and feet.

Maryam passed away due to cancer on 3rd June 2015 leaving Jahangir heartbroken and devastated as he lost both his wife and his son within three months of each other leaving him with no family members left but his mother and grandson Osama Fazal Qureshi who lives in Texas, USA.
