Isaiah Washington, a Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner, became a household name as Dr. George O'Malley on ABC's Grey's Anatomy. He was born in Los Angeles, California, to Earl and Patricia Washington. His parents divorced when he was only three months old
He grew up with his mother and two sisters in South Central Los Angeles. In 1993, he graduated from South Carolina State University with a degree in Drama. In 1998, he played the role of Tariq on the NBC series Martin.
In 2003, he became a cast member on the hit ABC series Grey's Anatomy as Dr. George O'Malley. In 2008, he released his first book The Gospel According to Harlem: A Spiritual Memoir of a Son of the South Central Projects by an African American Child Raised by a Single Mother .
He is also the author of The Soul of Black Folks: Living with Soul Power , The Best Man: How I Learned to Lead (with David Ritz) , and God's Man: The Life and Times of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (with David Ritz).
