Helen Thompson was born in the Midlands of England. She received her B.A. from Oxford University and her M.Phil. from New College, Oxford University
Her career as a novelist began with the publication of "A Season in the Congo" in 1968, followed by "The Sealed Knot" (1970). Her first book of short stories, "The Great Fire of London", was published in 1974, followed by "The Green House", a sequel to "The Great Fire of London", in 1975. Helen is married to the poet Francis Thompson, her great-uncle, and they have two grown children.
