The Grim Reaper is a fictional character, first appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics, and is commonly referred to as Death. The character was created by writer-artist Jack Kirby and first appeared in the "New Gods" #1 (cover-dated Jan. 1972). The character's name is derived from the religious concept of the Grim Reaper, which refers to the personification of death and a personification of divine judgment. The character has since been used and adapted by other comic book publishers and writers.
